Kolkwitzia amabilis is a deciduous shrub with arching, overhanging branches and can grow up to four metres tall, depending on the location and cultivar.

The leaves, which sit opposite each other on the branches, are egg-shaped, oval and more or less pointed. Young leaves can be reddish in colour.
